EURATOM CRICKET CLUB WINS ANOTHER TITLE !

Over the week-end of 11th &12th October 2003, just 15 months after winning the National U/13 cricket championship at Taino (VA), the European School of Varese team won their second consecutive national title, this time at the ground of the Gallicano Cricket Club at the feet of the Dea Fortuna temple in Palestrina in the Monti Prenestini. The usual format of a series of games over the two days initially saw the Varese team up against the Maremma Club from Grosseto & the Pianoro Club from Bologna in the first round.

The team from Lombardy, who play as the Junior section of the Euratom Cricket Club Ispra, counted in their ranks two players from the Italian National team, the German Kristof Starost & the Italian Matthew Kilroy. But in the first game against the Tuscan champions it was two of the less experienced players, Kyle Berry & Murtaza Abbas Shamsi, who took the Ispra side to victory scoring 29 important runs. In the next game though it was the classy Oliver Makin whose 55 runs single-handedly put paid to the Emilian champions.

 Euratom came through their qualifying round on the Saturday unbeaten & the next day saw them face their traditional rivals from Rome, the Capannelle Cricket Club,  in the first semi-final.  Apart from an exceptional effort from the young Harry Starost, the Euratom batting was mediocre and the team could only put on 59. Perhaps not enough to guarantee victory, but an excellent all-round performance in the field limited the Romans to only 31 runs. Matthew Price deserves special mention for a gritty performance behind the stumps in his first outing with the gloves.

And so to the final against a Gallicano team whose deadly, fast bowler, Dylan Sarnielli, had already blown away all their previous opponents. But he had no success  against the determined & experienced Euratom  batsmen who put on a good score of 73 runs, including another 36 runs from Oli Makin. Makin then bowled cleverly to take 5 wickets for  just 5 runs & put the result beyond doubt for Ispra.

L’EURATOM CRICKET SI CONCEDE IL BIS – UN ALTRO SCUDETTO DI CRICKET !

Sabato scorso, quindici mesi dopo lo scudetto tricolore Juniores di cricket,  vinto a Taino, i ragazzi della Scuola Europea di Varese hanno conquistato un secondo scudetto tricolore del torneo di cricket, questa volta sul campo del Gallicano Cricket Club, ai piedi del tempio della Dea Fortuna a Palestrina ,nei Monti Prenestini. La solita formula di una serie di partite articolate su due giorni,  inizialmente ha visto la squadra varesina confrontare nel  suo girone il Maremma Cricket di Grosseto ed il Pianoro Cricket di Bologna.  

La squadra lombarda, che milita nei colori sociali dell’Euratom Cricket Club di Ispra,  vanta già un paio di azzurri di categoria, il tedesco Kristof Starost e l’italiano Matthew Kilroy. Ma nella prima partita contro I campioni toscani sono stati i  due elementi più giovani della squadra, Kyle Berry e Murtaza Abbas Shamsi a segnare i 29 punti che hanno sigillato la vittoria per gli ispresi. La partita successiva  ha invece garantito  la vittoria sui campioni emiliani, una stupenda prestazione del trascinatore inglese, Oliver Makin,  con 55 punti in battuta.

Vincitori del girone di qualificazione, l’indomani ha previsto per I ragazzi dell’Euratom una semi-finale contro I loro rivali di sempre, il Capannelle Cricket Club di Roma. Nonostante una prestazione mediocre in battuta, ad eccezione del giovanissimo Harry Starost, l’Euratom ha totalizzato 59 punti. Forse non bastavano per vincere ma un eccellente lavoro di squadra in fase di lancio ha limitato i romani a un punteggio di soli 31 punti. Degno di menzione è anche la grinta della matricola, Matthew Price, che ha indossato i guantoni del ricevitore  per la prima volta.

La finale è stata contro il Gallicano,  squadra di casa, munita di un micidiale lanciatore,  Dylan Sarnelli, che aveva già spazzato via tutti gli altri avversari. Così non è stato  contro la grinta e l'esperienza dei battitori ispresi che hanno raggiunto alla fine dell’innings un buon totale di 73 punti, di cui Makin ne ha segnati 36. Ed in fase di lancio lo stesso Makin ha eliminato ben 5 battitori del Gallicano per solo 5 punti, assicurando, senza alcun dubbio il titolo alla sua squadra.
